Whatever it is that you pay attention to will dominate your thoughts and by extension your life.
Do you pay attention to people or things of lesser value?

What is it that seek your attention?
“Whatever you focus your attention on will become important to you even if it’s unimportant”.
That suggest to me that your focus and attention are synonymous to each other.
What you focus on gets your attention for action.
If you are not acting rightly or not getting your desired outcome may be you need to explore your line of focus and by extension the direction of your attention which influences your dominant thought.
Listen my friends , your thoughts determines the direction of your motion of energy and the resultant outcomes. “As a man thinketh so is He”.
What you pay your attention (energy) on determines what your final product will turn out to be.
How are you using your energy of attention and focus today?
Think about this for minute or two.
What’s occupies your mind and thoughts?
Are they Great things, enabling, creative, empowering, inquisitive, positivism, challenging thoughts proffering answers, encouraging, inspiring thoughts?
Are you occupied with lovely thoughts that boost your emotions humorously with inner joy of peace and enlightenment.
Are your thoughts and what you pay attention to clean and edifying for the soul and spirit?
What dominates your attention and focus persistently?
These challenging and value based questions are to help you do a routine self assessment of your focus and what dominate your attention daily so as to self regulate your mind to a better and more purposeful and productive outcomes in your life journey so you can maximally be a positive influence to your community and the market place of life.

To do all the above you must kill your adversary i.e your ego and engage in a dose of humility with a teachable spirit and a posture of willingness to learn everyday.
My friend it is a virtue to understand and be willing to engage in a continuous growth lifestyle for whatever ceases to grow eventually dies.

Have a teachable spirit and pay attention to lofty and noble matters of value
that brings true Joy and contentment.
